North African Country, Morocco defeated the USA 4-0 in the 2024 Paris Summer Olympics in the quarterfinals at the Velodrome stadium in Marseille.

Morocco took an early lead with a controversial penalty in the 28th minute. After a VAR review, Soufiane Rahimi converted the spot-kick following a challenge from Philadelphia Union defender Nathaniel Harriel, who made contact with Rahimi’s calf.

The U.S. managed to avoid further goals before halftime and emerged with a higher tempo after the break. However, their efforts were in vain as Morocco continued to assert control. The Atlas Lions doubled their lead with a brilliant counterattack led by ex-Barcelona player Abde Ezzalzouli and finished by Ilias Akhomach in the 63rd minute.

Seven minutes later, PSG star Achraf Hakimi made it 3-0 with a stunning solo run through the U.S. defense. In stoppage time, another penalty against Harriel, this time for a handball despite his arm being in a natural position, allowed Mehdi Maouhoub to score the final goal.

The U.S. struggled with ambition and aggression throughout the match, appearing unsettled by the predominantly Moroccan crowd. Despite a commendable run to the quarterfinals, the U.S. fell short on the day they needed to perform at their best.

Overall, it was a promising but ultimately disappointing end to the U23 squad’s Olympic campaign. Their performance could catalyze future improvements in the program, marking their first Olympic appearance since 2008 and their first knockout stage appearance in 24 years.
