Tanzanian police are investigating a viral video allegedly showing five men gang-raping a young woman, causing a public uproar in the East African nation.

Despite allegations that the suspects are soldiers, security forces have yet to comment on these claims.

While confirming that the investigation is “progressing well,” the police have not verified reports of any arrests.

In a statement posted on X, police refuted rumours of the victim’s death, calling such claims “falsehoods” and assuring the public that the young woman is “very safe.” They also urged the public not to share the video to prevent further trauma to the victim and her family.

The video began circulating online on Sunday, sending shockwaves through Tanzania, a conservative society grappling with a surge in gender-based violence. The victim is reportedly from Yombo Dovya, a suburb of Dar es Salaam.

Authorities have asked the public to remain calm as investigations continue, promising detailed information once legal procedures are completed.

Human rights groups and social media users are calling for swift and decisive action. The Legal and Human Rights Centre warned that ignoring such issues would lead to their increase in society. The Tanganyika Law Society condemned the incident as a “gross violation” of laws and societal norms. Home Affairs Minister Hamad Masauni stated that the suspects were “already” under arrest but did not provide additional details.
