Nigeria’s Falconets are gearing up for a high-stakes showdown as they prepare to face a formidable Japan team in the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup Round of 16 on Thursday in Medellin, Colombia.

Japan has been one of the tournament’s most dominant forces, advancing through Group E with a perfect record. They’ve scored an impressive 13 goals while conceding just one, with standout performances including a 7-0 rout of New Zealand, a 4-1 victory over Ghana, and a 2-0 win against Austria.

Meanwhile, the Falconets secured their place in the knockout stages by finishing second in Group D. The Nigerian team earned six points from three matches, scoring six goals and conceding three. Their crucial 4-0 win over Venezuela in the final group match was key to their progression to the Round of 16.

Coach Christopher Danjuma’s squad demonstrated their offensive prowess in that game, with goals from Amina Bello, Chiamaka Okwuchukwu, Flourish Sebastine, and Joy Igbokwe.

“The girls gave everything in the last game. We know Japan will be a tough opponent, but we are ready,” Danjuma said after the match.

While the Falconets face a challenging opponent in Japan, they remain confident as they aim to outshine their opponents. A victory would set them up for a quarterfinal clash against either Spain or Canada. The match is scheduled for September 13.
