The United Kingdom has committed an additional £7.5 million to the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS), raising its total financial support to ATMIS and AMISOM to £77 million since 2021. This funding underscores the UK’s ongoing role in enhancing Somalia’s security and stability.

ATMIS plays a crucial role in Somalia, protecting key areas such as population centers, supply routes, and infrastructure. The mission also assists the Somali National Army in joint operations, supports the delivery of humanitarian aid, and safeguards critical political processes, including elections. UK support has been instrumental in combating al-Shabaab’s influence and ensuring protection for civilians.

The latest funding will cover military stipends for troops from five contributing countries—Burundi, Djibouti, Ethiopia, Kenya, and Uganda—and help ATMIS execute its phased handover of security responsibilities to Somali Security Forces.

British Ambassador to Somalia, Mike Nithavrianakis, emphasized the UK’s long-term commitment, saying, “By supporting ATMIS, we are investing in Somalia’s security today and its stability tomorrow.” Somalia’s Defence Minister Abdikadir Mohamed Nur expressed gratitude for the continued UK partnership, as did AU Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace and Security, Ambassador Bankole Adeoye, who urged other international partners to follow the UK’s example.

This contribution strengthens the UK’s dedication to Somalia’s future, aiming for long-term peace and security in both Somalia and the broader region.
