Former governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ogun State, Ladi Adebutu, regained his freedom early Tuesday after being detained and questioned by the Department of State Services (DSS).

His release was confirmed by his media aide, Afolabi Orekoya, during an interview.

Adebutu’s detention was initially announced on Monday by the Ogun State PDP Publicity Secretary, Kayode Adebayo, who revealed that the DSS had invited Adebutu in connection with a reported disturbance during the local government elections held last Saturday.

In a statement, Adebayo acknowledged the arrest, saying, “This is to inform members of our great party, the Peoples Democratic Party, that the leader of the party has truly been detained by the DSS for charges yet unknown. However, our principal has called for calm and directed all members, supporters, and well-wishers to remain assured that this time shall pass—it is one of the prices for our democracy.”

Efforts to secure Adebutu’s bail on Monday were unsuccessful, with lawyers prepared to take further steps by Tuesday morning.

Adebutu contested as the PDP governorship candidate in Ogun State during the 2023 elections and remains a prominent figure in the party.
