President Bola Tinubu has commended the establishment of the Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty, a bold initiative championed by Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. Tinubu described the alliance as a transformative step in addressing one of the world’s most pressing challenges.

Speaking during the opening session of the 19th G20 Leaders Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Tinubu lauded Brazil’s leadership, emphasizing the significance of the initiative in advancing global efforts to combat hunger and poverty.

“This bold and visionary step underscores Brazil’s leadership in addressing one of the most urgent and persistent challenges facing our world today,” Tinubu said.

The Nigerian president linked the alliance to the priorities he outlined during his inauguration 18 months ago, highlighting Nigeria’s readiness to adopt international best practices to accelerate economic development.

Tinubu announced Nigeria’s endorsement of the declaration of commitment to join the Global Alliance, a move he described as a critical milestone in leveraging global cooperation to complement domestic efforts in tackling hunger and poverty.

He affirmed that Nigeria’s participation aligns with its commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 1 on eradicating poverty and SDG 2 on achieving zero hunger.

“These goals are at the core of Nigeria’s development agenda, and the Alliance offers a platform to accelerate progress towards them,” Tinubu noted.

He praised the Alliance’s holistic approach, which brings together governments, international organizations, and civil society to address both the immediate and structural causes of hunger and poverty.

“The creation of this Alliance marks a significant milestone in our global efforts to eradicate hunger and poverty, and it also sends a powerful message of solidarity to vulnerable populations around the globe,” he stated.

Tinubu reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to fostering international collaboration and utilizing global resources to drive sustainable development at home.
