Ethiopian police have arrested six popular TikTok creators, including Adonay Berhane, Wongelawit Gebre Endrias, and Yohannes Mekonnen, for wearing “indecent attire” at a public awards ceremony. The influencers, known for their lifestyle and fashion content, were detained over allegations of promoting behavior that undermines public morality.
Adonay, a 25-year-old motivational creator with nearly four million followers, was named “TikToker of the Year” at the Ethiopia Creative Award 2025.
The arrests have sparked debate across Ethiopian social media, with supporters arguing they violate freedom of expression and stifle creativity. Conservative voices, however, defend the police, insisting public figures must respect cultural norms.
The government hasn’t commented, but police warn further action will be taken against those violating cultural values or promoting “shallow culture”.
