The Foundation for Investigative Journalism (FIJ) has announced the release of its founder, Fisayo Soyombo, who was detained by the Nigerian Army.

Soyombo had been held for three days by the 6 Division of the Nigerian Army in Port Harcourt, Rivers State. His arrest, according to military authorities, occurred at what they described as an illegal oil bunkering site.

In a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter) on Friday evening, FIJ confirmed the journalist’s release and expressed gratitude for the public and media support.

“We can confirm that our founder, @fisayosoyombo, has now been released by @HQNigerianArmy, following the intense media campaign you all mounted,” FIJ wrote.

The organization criticized the Army’s characterization of Soyombo’s activities, calling it a “deliberate mischaracterization” and promising to address the issue.

“Our immediate concern is the safety of Fisayo Soyombo, considering the extensive information he shared with the Army about his investigative fieldwork during his detention,” FIJ added.

The foundation said it is closely monitoring the situation to ensure that Soyombo’s safety is not compromised following his release.
