Nine Dead, Six Missing as Migrant Boat Sinks off Tunisian Coast

Tunisians trying to flee to Europe gather aboard a ship owned by the Tunisian coast guards, after being intercepted by them at sea on August 10, 2023. Mediterranean Sea crossing attempts from Tunisia have multiplied following a incendiary speech by the Tunisian president who had alleged that "hordes" of irregular migrants were causing crime and posing a demographic threat to the mainly Arab country. Judge Farid Ben Jha stated that search efforts are ongoing to locate the missing migrants, all of whom hailed from sub-Saharan African countries. Survivors reported that the boat took on water and broke down during the journey.

Tunisia is currently facing a severe migration crisis, emerging as a leading departure point for migrants from sub-Saharan Africa and Tunisians seeking to reach Europe, overtaking Libya in recent years.

The tragedy underscores the growing risks associated with migrant crossings in the Mediterranean.
