Super Eagles captain, William Troost-Ekong has expressed optimism about Nigeria’s chances of winning a fourth African title at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco. His comments come after Monday’s group stage draw in Rabat.

Nigeria, three-time African champions, were placed in Group C alongside Tunisia, Uganda, and Tanzania—two of whom will co-host the 2027 AFCON. Troost-Ekong, who was named the Most Valuable Player at the last edition in Ivory Coast, believes the team is well-prepared to “go all the way” in Morocco after finishing as runners-up last year. “The AFCON 2025 draw is done, and it’s an exciting group. These are three teams that must be respected,” Ekong said.

“I think we have the experience now to handle the challenges ahead. There are no easy games in Africa, but I believe we have everything it takes to top this group and, this time, go all the way.”

By the time the tournament kicks off in December, the Super Eagles will be under new coach Eric Chelle, a Franco-Malian tactician who took over earlier this year. Ekong is confident the squad will have enough time to adapt to his style.

“We learned a lot from our experience in Abidjan last year. This time, we will be more prepared. Throughout the year, we are working hard to ensure everyone is fit and ready under the new coach.”

Nigeria’s campaign begins against Tanzania on December 23 at the Fez Stadium. They will then face Tunisia at the same venue on December 27 before concluding the group stage against Uganda on December 30.

Nigeria is the most successful team in the group, boasting three AFCON titles and making their 21st tournament appearance. Uganda, meanwhile, will be competing in their eighth AFCON, while Tanzania has participated only three times.

Tunisia, a familiar foe, eliminated Nigeria in the round of 16 of the 2021 tournament in Cameroon. The North Africans have one AFCON title, which they won on home soil in 2004, and are making their 21st appearance in the continental competition. The 2025 AFCON will run from December 21 to January 18, 2026.
