The Federal Government of Nigeria has proposed a new 12-year basic education model, but has denied scrapping the Junior Secondary School (JSS) and Senior Secondary School (SSS) structure.

According to the Director of Press at the Federal Ministry of Education, Folashade Boriowo, the proposal aims to provide 12 years of compulsory education while retaining the current 6-3-3 structure.

The proposal, presented by the Minister of Education Tunji Alausa at the Extraordinary National Council on Education Meeting, seeks to eliminate barriers between JSS and SSS, allowing for a seamless transition of students without external assessments. However, the ministry emphasizes that this is still a subject of consultation and deliberation.

A final decision on the proposal is expected to be made at the October 2025 National Council on Education Meeting, after deliberations with stakeholders.

The Federal Government reassures the public that it remains committed to enhancing access to quality education while aligning with global best practices.
