Nigeria’s quest for a place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup took another hit after a 1-1 draw with Zimbabwe at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo, Akwa Ibom.

The Super Eagles had boosted their qualification chances with a 2-0 victory over Rwanda last Friday. However, they struggled to maintain momentum against the Warriors on Tuesday, missing several opportunities despite dominating play.

Victor Osimhen gave Nigeria the lead in the 73rd minute, heading in a well-worked move involving Tolu Arokodare and Ola Aina. But just when it seemed like the Eagles would secure all three points, Tawanda Chirewa capitalized on a lapse in defence, scoring in the 90th minute to silence the home crowd.

With this result, Nigeria remains fourth in Group C with seven points, trailing Lesotho and Benin Republic by one point. South Africa leads the group with 13 points as the race for World Cup qualification intensifies.
