Zimbabwean activist Linda Tsungirirai Masarira, who is also the President of the Labour Economists and Afrikan Democrats (LEAD), has expressed her strong support for Captain Ibrahim Traoré, the President of Burkina Faso.

Masarira praised Traoré’s leadership in confronting imperialist forces and dismantling neocolonial structures that continue to hinder Africa’s liberation.

In a statement released to the press, Masarira highlighted Traoré as a revolutionary figure in West Africa, likening him to the great Pan-Africanist Thomas Sankara. She stated, “Captain Traoré is not only reclaiming Burkina Faso’s sovereignty but is also championing the cause for every nation in the Global South fighting to break free from the legacy of colonial powers and their agents.”

Masarira reaffirmed LEAD’s alignment with Traoré’s vision, emphasizing the movement’s commitment to Pan-Africanism, self-determination, and economic justice: “LEAD stands firmly with the decolonisation efforts in Burkina Faso. We applaud his dedication to transforming national institutions, nationalising resources, and empowering the people of Burkina Faso.”

She also expressed appreciation for the solidarity shown by other African nations, particularly Mali, Niger, and Guinea, and lauded the people who protested against foreign interference. “We salute the people and governments of progressive West African nations who have shown unwavering support for Traoré and Burkina Faso, standing against neo-imperialist meddling in Africa’s affairs,” Masarira added.

Masarira called for greater unity across the continent, urging African nations, Pan-African movements, civil society organisations, and the diaspora to unite in this wave of resistance. “The time has come for Africans to assert their sovereignty, protect their natural wealth, and liberate ourselves from underdevelopment driven by foreign interests,” she said.

In closing, Masarira paid tribute to Traoré’s leadership, declaring, “Burkina Faso is leading a historic charge, and Captain Ibrahim Traoré is Africa’s golden son of liberation. We must support his vision, defend it, and replicate the model of courage, independence, and pride that he is building.”
