Rwanda has confirmed it is in the preliminary stages of discussions with the United States regarding the possible reception of migrants deported from the U.S.

Speaking on state broadcaster Rwanda TV on Sunday, Rwandan Foreign Minister Olivier Nduhungirehe said, “We are in discussions with the United States. It has not yet reached a stage where we can say exactly how things will proceed, but the talks are ongoing, still in the early stages.”

Rwanda has positioned itself in recent years as a willing host for migrants that Western nations seek to relocate. In 2022, the East African nation signed a high-profile deal with the United Kingdom to accept thousands of asylum seekers. However, that agreement was scrapped in 2024 by UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer shortly after his election.

The talks with the U.S. mark Rwanda’s continued engagement on migration-related partnerships with Western nations.
