The Kenyan government has strongly condemned the “shameful” incident where a shoe was thrown at President William Ruto during a rally in Migori county.

The shoe hit the president’s left arm while he was addressing the crowd.

Government spokesman Isaac Mwaura called for those behind the incident to be apprehended, emphasizing the need to respect the institution of the presidency.

Three people have reportedly been arrested in connection with the incident, although the police have not confirmed this. Some MPs have criticized the shoe-throwing, describing it as a major security lapse.

The incident has sparked debate, with some Kenyans feeling that the act was disrespectful, while others see it as a reflection of frustrations over the state of the economy.

The president’s security team quickly responded to the incident, and Ruto seemed unharmed. However, the incident has raised concerns about the safety of public officials, particularly after an opposition MP was shot dead in Nairobi last week.

Nelson Koech, an MP in the president’s party, described the incident as an “affront to our democracy” and emphasized the need to secure the head of state.

This incident occurs against the backdrop of growing tensions in Kenya, with President Ruto facing protests from Kenyans frustrated with the cost of living and increased taxes since he took office in 2022.

Despite a recent cooperation agreement with veteran opposition politician Raila Odinga, tensions remain high in the region.
