A convoy carrying heavy mining equipment to Allied Gold’s Sadiola mine in Mali was attacked over the weekend, resulting in two large trucks being set ablaze, an excavator being damaged, and two pick-up trucks being stolen.
The attack, which occurred in the Kayes region, points to expanding security risks facing mining companies operating in the Sahel region.
Fortunately, the eight people present, all employees of Neemba, the local Caterpillar dealer, were unharmed due to the timely intervention of nearby Malian army soldiers.
The incident highlights the growing security concerns in the region, where Islamist militant groups continue to pose a threat.
Mali is one of Africa’s largest gold producers, with several major mining companies active in the region.
