Tension gripped Rano town in Rano Local Government Area of Kano State following a violent protest that erupted after a boy was allegedly beaten to death by police officers.

The incident, confirmed by a local source speaking to AAN TV, has plunged the community into chaos and drawn heightened police presence to the area.

According to the source, the boy was brought out of a cell at a local police station and allegedly brutalised by officers until he died. His body was then taken directly to his father, an act that reportedly triggered outrage and disbelief among residents.

“They took his corpse straight to the father after the beating. That was what sparked everything,” the source told AAN TV.

Community backlash turns deadly as residents storm police station, kill DPO and torch building

In response, enraged community members staged a protest that quickly escalated into violence. Protesters marched to the Rano Barracks Police Station, where they reportedly assaulted and seriously injured the Divisional Police Officer (DPO). The police station was set ablaze during the unrest.

The DPO, whose identity has not yet been officially released, was rushed to a hospital in the Kano metropolitan area for treatment. However, he later died.

As of Monday, a heavy police presence has been deployed in Rano town in an attempt to quell further violence and prevent additional attacks on law enforcement facilities. Residents described the atmosphere as extremely tense, with fears of continued clashes and reprisals.

The Kano State Police Command has not yet issued an official statement regarding the alleged killing of the boy, the attack on the police station, or the death of the DPO.

This incident raises renewed concerns about police brutality and the fragile state of trust between security agencies and local communities in Nigeria, particularly in rural areas where accountability is often difficult to enforce.
