President Bola Tinubu has launched the construction of a new annex office for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Abuja, emphasizing Nigeria’s commitment to electoral integrity, institutional autonomy and democratic growth.

Describing the event as one of national significance, Tinubu reaffirmed the government’s dedication to strengthening democracy and ensuring INEC is fully equipped to carry out its constitutional mandate with courage, fairness and excellence.

The new annex, designed to alleviate congestion at INEC’s current headquarters, will feature modern facilities including offices, meeting rooms, a 1,000-seat auditorium and advanced IT infrastructure.

Tinubu praised INEC’s role in sustaining Nigeria’s democratic process, noting its pivotal role in conducting free, fair and credible elections that underpin public trust in governance.

INEC Chairman Mahmood Yakubu expressed gratitude to Tinubu for personally attending the ceremony, highlighting the commission’s decade-long effort to bring the project to fruition.

The annex will also house a museum chronicling Nigeria’s electoral history, providing citizens, especially students, with insight into the country’s democratic evolution.

Tinubu commended Minister of the Federal Capital Territory Nyesom Wike for initiating the project, lauding it as a step towards safeguarding democracy.

He urged Nigerians to view democracy as an ongoing journey, calling for collective efforts to strengthen institutions, safeguard freedoms and protect the nation’s future.
