Senegal and Guinea will clash in two high-profile friendly matches in early July as both nations ramp up preparations for the TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024, set to take place in East Africa this August.

The reigning CHAN champions, Senegal, have opened camp at the Jules François Bocandé Technical Centre, ushering in a new era under fresh leadership but with the same goal—retaining their continental crown. Meanwhile, Guinea will temporarily relocate their home-based squad to Dakar, following official clearance to conduct a portion of their CHAN preparations in Senegal.

The two West African rivals will meet on 4 and 7 July at the iconic Stade Abdoulaye Wade in Diamniadio—a stadium that has witnessed several of Senegal’s recent footballing triumphs.

For Guinea, choosing to train and play in a regional rival’s territory is a bold tactical move. The proximity offers logistical ease and heightened competition, while also carrying a symbolic edge. Senegal eliminated Guinea in the last CHAN qualification series, and these friendlies offer a chance for redemption.

With Guinea’s domestic league now concluded, the technical staff has full access to its top local talents, allowing for uninterrupted focus ahead of the continental tournament.

Senegal, who lifted their first CHAN trophy in 2023 after a dramatic victory over hosts Algeria, are in the process of rebuilding a squad capable of defending their title. The friendlies will be crucial for testing combinations, sharpening tactics, and fostering team chemistry.

The Lions B have been drawn into a challenging Group D, where they will face Nigeria, Sudan, and Congo—all formidable opponents. These friendlies offer a valuable benchmark to assess their readiness for the title defense.

Guinea’s Syli B, meanwhile, find themselves in Group C alongside hosts Uganda, Niger, Algeria, and South Africa—a mix of powerhouses and emerging threats. For them, the matches against Senegal serve as a vital test of character and capability.

More than mere tune-ups, these fixtures embody the intensity, ambition, and national pride that define CHAN—a tournament reserved for players competing in their domestic leagues.

As both sides intensify their preparations, all eyes will be on Dakar to see which team looks more prepared to shine when CHAN 2024 kicks off in August.
