Rufai was a key player in Nigeria’s historic victory at the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations and the country’s first appearance at the FIFA World Cup in 1994.

Tinubu highlighted Rufai’s pioneering role in professionalizing Nigerian football, having played in several European countries, including Belgium, the Netherlands, Portugal, and Spain.

The President also lauded Rufai’s efforts in mentoring the next generation through his Staruf Football Academy. “He continued to inspire, mentor, and nurture young footballers,” Tinubu said.

The President offered prayers for the repose of Rufai’s soul and comfort to his family and all who mourn him.

Tributes have continued to pour in from across the football and political landscapes, with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar describing Rufai’s passing as a “profound loss”. Super Eagles forward Ahmed Musa also paid an emotional tribute to the football legend, saying, “Fly high, DODOMAYANA — the nation mourns a hero”.
