A US judge has cleared the way for the deportation of eight migrants to South Sudan, despite their lawyers’ claims that they would face safety concerns in the country.

The migrants, who are from countries including Cuba, Laos, Mexico, Burma, Sudan, and Vietnam, had argued that their deportation would violate the US Constitution’s prohibition on cruel and unusual punishment.

However, the judge ruled that a recent Supreme Court decision required him to deny their bid to halt the deportation.

The migrants’ lawyers have expressed disappointment with the ruling and said that they do not plan to appeal.

The deportation is scheduled to take place on Friday.
