South Africa’s Police Minister Senzo Mchunu has been embroiled in controversy after KwaZulu-Natal police boss Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi accused him of having ties to criminal gangs and meddling in police investigations into politically motivated murders.

According to Gen Mkhwanazi, Mchunu dissolved a task force set up in 2018 to investigate the killing of politicians in KwaZulu-Natal after it began cracking down on “high-profile syndicates” that allegedly included politicians, police officers, drug cartels, and businesspeople.

Allegations and Denials

Mchuwani has vehemently denied the allegations, describing them as “wild” and without foundation.

However, President Cyril Ramaphosa has taken the matter seriously, describing the allegations as “grave national security concern” and vowing to take action.

Ramaphosa has also urged all parties involved to exercise discipline and restraint, warning that the “trading of accusations and counter-accusations threatens to undermine public confidence and sow confusion”.

Investigation and Implications

Gen Mkhwanazi has confirmed that a criminal investigation has been instituted to look into the alleged infiltration of law enforcement by these syndicates.

The allegations against Mchunu have raised questions about the integrity of the police force and the government’s commitment to fighting corruption. If true, the allegations could have serious implications for Mchunu’s future as Police Minister and potentially destabilize the government.
