Several players of Nigeria’s Super Falcons visited South African forward Gabriela Salgado in hospital on Wednesday, offering support after the serious injury she sustained during the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) semi-final clash between the two nations in Morocco.

Salgado suffered a mid-shaft fracture to her left leg during the closing minutes of the match and had to be stretchered off in the 88th minute. The injury halted play briefly as players from both sides appeared visibly distressed.

Following a successful surgery at the Mohamed VI University Hospital in Casablanca, the South African Football Association confirmed that Salgado will be sidelined for the rest of the year as she begins her recovery.

In a heartfelt gesture, Super Falcons captain Rasheedat Ajibade led a delegation of Nigerian players to visit Salgado in the hospital. The team presented her with a signed Super Falcons jersey and a message of support, expressing solidarity with the injured Banyana Banyana star.

“The entire Super Falcons of Nigeria family, from players and coaches to staff, were profoundly saddened to learn of the serious injury sustained by Gabriela Salgado during yesterday’s match,” the letter read.

“Our immediate thoughts are solely with her for comfort, care, and the recovery journey ahead. The spirit of competition instantly fades in moments like these, replaced by a shared sense of care for a fellow athlete.”

The Super Falcons also extended their well wishes to Salgado’s family, friends, and the entire South African team, emphasizing unity and compassion beyond the pitch.

Nigeria went on to win the fiercely contested match 2–1, thanks to a late goal from Michelle Alozie, earning a place in Saturday’s final against hosts Morocco. The Falcons will now aim to secure a record-extending 10th WAFCON title, but their display of sportsmanship off the pitch has already won them admiration.
