President Bola Tinubu has approved a significant reduction in the cost of kidney dialysis in federal hospitals across Nigeria, cutting the price from ₦50,000 to ₦12,000 per session. This move is expected to bring relief to thousands of Nigerians battling kidney-related diseases.

The subsidy is already being implemented in major federal hospitals across the six geopolitical zones, including the Federal Medical Centre in Ebute-Metta, Lagos, and the University College Hospital in Ibadan.

The Special Adviser to the President on Policy Information, Daniel Bwala, announced that more federal medical centers and teaching hospitals will be added to the subsidy program before the end of the year to widen access nationwide.

This initiative is part of President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, aimed at ensuring that no Nigerian is denied healthcare due to cost.

Previously, Tinubu had approved free caesarean sections for pregnant women in federal hospitals to boost maternal healthcare and reduce preventable maternal deaths.

Affected Hospitals:

  • Federal Medical Centres:
    • Ebute-Metta, Lagos
    • Jabi, Abuja
    • Abeokuta
    • Azare
    • Owerri
  • Teaching Hospitals:
    • University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan
    • University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH), Maiduguri
    • Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), Lagos
    • University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH), Benin
    • University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH), Calabar

This development is expected to alleviate the financial burden on patients undergoing dialysis, making healthcare more accessible and affordable.
