United Bank for Africa (UBA) has clarified that its head office, UBA House on Marina, was not affected by the fire outbreak reported on Tuesday, September 16, at Afriland Tower on Broad Street, Lagos Island.

In a statement, the bank explained that while Afriland Tower houses one of its branches, contrary to reports on social media and some online platforms, its Marina head office remained unaffected.

“We are aware of the fire incident at a building on Broad Street, Lagos Island, which incidentally houses one of our many branches in Lagos Island,” the statement read.
“As against reports on online and social media, the affected building is not UBA House, Marina, the Bank’s head office.”

The bank assured that the safety of its staff, customers, and visitors had been secured.

Earlier, emergency responders from the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service confirmed that the fire originated from the inverter room in the basement of Afriland Tower, spreading thick smoke across several floors.

“Evacuation of occupants is in progress, while firefighting operations have been concluded, dousing the earlier panic before the arrival of the first responders,” said Ogabi Olajide, Deputy Controller General of the agency.

Crews from Ebute Elefun and Sari Iganmu fire stations were deployed after the call was received at 1:38 p.m. No casualties have been reported as of press time.
