Security forces in Madagascar have fired rubber bullets and tear gas to disperse thousands of protesters marching through the capital, Antananarivo, rejecting President Andry Rajoelina’s offer to attend talks.

The protests, led by the Gen Z Mada movement, began two weeks ago over power and water shortages, corruption, high unemployment, and the cost-of-living crisis.

Despite Rajoelina’s promise to step down in a year’s time if he fails to address the concerns, the protesters remain resolute, demanding his immediate resignation.

The demonstrations have resulted in at least 22 deaths and numerous injuries, according to the United Nations, although the authorities dispute these figures.

The situation remains tense, with protesters vowing to continue their struggle.
