Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo has vowed to resign from office if President Bola Ahmed Tinubu fails to secure victory in the state during the 2027 presidential election.

Okpebholo made the declaration during an interview with veteran journalist Babajide Otitoju, insisting that the political climate in Edo has swung decisively in Tinubu’s favor.

He attributed Tinubu’s popularity to the president’s impact on the state, citing various infrastructural projects, including the Sapele Road and Adesuwa flyover, which he said are deeply cherished by Edo residents.

The governor dismissed the idea of opposition in the state, claiming that everyone is supporting Tinubu’s re-election bid. He specifically targeted former Governor Godwin Obaseki, stating that his poor record as governor would prevent him from returning to Edo State.

Okpebholo also downplayed the Labour Party’s strong showing in previous elections, calling the party irrelevant in the state’s current political climate.

Okpebholo described himself as a student of the late Chief Tony Anenih, emphasizing his grassroots approach to politics.

He reiterated his bold statement, saying, “If Asiwaju does not win here, I will resign as governor. I am telling you. I am the one telling you. There is no election here for him”.
