ECOWAS Backs Ghana’s President Mahama for African Union Chairmanship in 2027

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has unanimously endorsed President John Dramani Mahama of Ghana as its sole candidate for the Chairmanship of the African Union in 2027.

The decision was made during the 95th ordinary session of the ECOWAS Council of Ministers held in Abuja, Nigeria.

Ghana’s Foreign Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, announced the endorsement, stating that the Authority of Heads of State and Government is expected to adopt the declaration on Sunday.

Ablakwa expressed gratitude to ECOWAS ministers for their support, describing President Mahama as a “visionary and Pan-African leader”.
