The Nigerian government and the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) are mourning the deaths of seven journalists who were killed in a tragic road accident in Gombe State on Monday evening.
The journalists were traveling in an NUJ bus along the Billiri-Kumo road after attending the wedding of a colleague from the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA).
The lone crash, which also left four other journalists injured, was reportedly caused by a burst tyre.
Minister of Information Mohammed Idris expressed deep shock and sorrow, calling the deaths a “harrowing moment” and a profound loss to the nation’s media industry.
The Gombe State Governor, Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, also described the incident as a painful tragedy, noting that the deceased were dedicated professionals who served the state with passion.
The NUJ called the loss a “devastating blow” and highlighted the need for improved road safety measures for journalists who are often on the road for their work. The injured are currently receiving medical care.
