The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has demanded an urgent review of workers’ wages in 2026, arguing that escalating inflation and widespread economic hardship have made current salaries unsustainable.

In a New Year’s message, NLC President Joe Ajaero stated that workers’ incomes must provide a “living wage” for a decent life, not just for “mere survival”.

Despite a minimum wage increase to ₦70,000 in July 2024, the NLC insists that soaring living costs have eroded workers’ purchasing power, making an immediate review necessary.

Ajaero said that while the NLC will engage in dialogue with the federal government, it is prepared to use “every legitimate means” to achieve its goal and will mobilize to hold all levels of government accountable.
