Former Ghanaian Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta has been detained in the United States by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) over the status of his current stay.
According to his lawyers, the detention is an immigration matter, and he is cooperating fully with authorities while they work to resolve it.
Ofori-Atta, who has been in the US since January 2025 for medical treatment including prostate cancer surgery, has a pending petition to adjust his immigration status, a common legal process to extend a stay.
He is reportedly being held at the Caroline Detention Facility in Virginia.
The detention complicates his legal situation, as he is considered a fugitive in Ghana, where the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has charged him with 78 counts of corruption and placed him on an Interpol Red Alert.
