Four British tourists have died after contracting stomach bugs while on holiday in Cape Verde, with families taking legal action against tour operator TUI.
The victims, Mark Ashley, 55, Elena Walsh, 64, Karen Pooley, 64, and a 56-year-old man, all fell ill with gastric symptoms during their trips to the islands off West Africa.
Mark Ashley’s wife Emma described her family’s shock at his death, while Karen Pooley’s husband Andy expressed their heartbreak.
The law firm Irwin Mitchell is representing the families and over 1,500 people who have fallen ill after visiting Cape Verde, alleging poor hygiene standards at resorts.
TUI has said it’s investigating the claims and provided support to affected customers. The incidents have raised concerns about food safety and hygiene in Cape Verde’s tourist industry.
