A 50-year-old Burundian man, Guillaume Harushimana, has been arrested in Italy for his alleged involvement in the 2014 murders of three Italian missionary nuns in Bujumbura, Burundi.

The victims, Olga Raschietti, 83, Lucia Pulici, 75, and Bernadetta Boggian, 79, were killed in two separate attacks on September 7-8, 2014. Prosecutors believe the killings were ordered by General Adolphe Nshimirimana, then head of Burundi’s secret police, who was later assassinated in 2015.

Harushimana, a close associate of the general, is suspected of instigating and supporting the murders.

The investigation was reopened in 2024 thanks to leads from an investigative book by Giusy Baioni, which uncovered new testimonies from other nuns.

Harushimana had previously denied involvement, claiming he was outside Burundi at the time of the murders.
