Militants have killed 15 soldiers and wounded five others at a military camp in northern Benin, according to the army spokesperson, Colonel James Johnson.
The attack, which occurred in the village of Kofouno on Wednesday, is believed to be linked to al Qaeda and Islamic State fighters who have been increasing attacks in the West African region.
The al Qaeda-linked group, Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM), claimed responsibility for the attack, but Colonel Johnson denied their claim that they controlled the Kofouno camp.
The army reportedly killed at least four of the attackers and destroyed several motorcycles.
This incident comes amid rising security concerns in Benin, with a recent military coup attempt citing deteriorating security in the north.
Benin is set to hold a presidential election next month, marking the end of President Patrice Talon’s rule.
