The Lagos State Prominent Indigenes have called for indigenous Lagosians to occupy the offices of governor, deputy governor and speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly in 2027, while also declaring full support for the re-election of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for a second term.
The position was reached at a technical committee meeting of the group held on March 18, 2026, where members deliberated extensively on the forthcoming 2027 general elections.
In a communiqué issued at the end of the meeting, the group said it resolved to support Tinubu’s second-term bid and agreed that the three top leadership positions in Lagos State should be occupied by indigenes of the state.
The communiqué, signed by the convener, Chief (Dr) Adesunbo Onitiri, stated that the position was anchored on the need to promote equity, preserve identity and ensure deeper stakeholder alignment in the governance of Lagos State.
The group stressed that aspirants seeking the offices must be bona fide indigenes with verifiable ancestral roots and must possess the required academic and professional qualifications. It also emphasized the need for demonstrable experience in governance, leadership or enterprise across the public or private sector.
According to the group, prospective candidates must have a proven record of integrity without any history of corruption or criminal infractions, while also being individuals of sound character, discipline and exemplary personal conduct.
The communiqué further noted that aspirants should have verifiable achievements within Lagos State or beyond and must demonstrate commitment to family values and societal responsibility. It added that those seeking the positions should be independent-minded but collaborative, with a focus on transformational leadership delivered with humility.
The Lagos State Prominent Indigenes said it would engage constructively with all qualified aspirants as part of an engagement framework aimed at identifying and supporting candidates best suited to steward the collective future of Lagos State. The statement reaffirmed the group’s commitment to participating in consultations ahead of the 2027 elections while maintaining its position on indigenous representation in the state’s top political offices.
