Former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, says his experience in governance and infrastructure delivery gives him the capacity to address Nigeria’s challenges ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Speaking on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief on Friday, Amaechi said he is confident in his understanding of the country’s problems and his ability to provide solutions.

“I don’t care who else is running. I’m running because I’m a Nigerian candidate. Because I know the Nigerian problem. And I can solve the Nigerian problem,” he said.

The former Rivers State governor pointed to projects executed during his tenure, including rail development and port reforms, as evidence of his record in public service. He also claimed his administration effectively tackled insecurity during his time in office, arguing that his experience sets him apart from other aspirants.

Amaechi, a member of the African Democratic Congress, also criticised the administration of President Bola Tinubu, saying the economic situation has deteriorated and that many Nigerians are currently facing hardship.

“Everybody is suffering, everybody is looking for food to eat. People can’t buy fuel, can’t travel. The airlines are threatening to increase transport fares; everything is skyrocketing,” he said.

He further alleged that the government was attempting to weaken opposition parties and urged the Independent National Electoral Commission to maintain independence ahead of the polls.

He also called on the judiciary to remain impartial, stressing the importance of credible elections.

“Whether free, fair or not free, if we are on the ballot, President Bola Tinubu will lose the election,” he said.

Amaechi is among several prominent figures already positioning for the 2027 presidential race, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Anambra State governor Peter Obi, former Kano governor Rabiu Kwankwaso, former Kaduna governor Nasir el-Rufai, and former Osun State governor Rauf Aregbesola.

The Independent National Electoral Commission has fixed January 16, 2027, for the presidential election, while party primaries are expected to hold between April 23 and May 30, 2026.
