The Kwara State Police Command has arrested 42 suspected illegal miners in connection with the abduction of a traditional ruler, Oba Salman Olátúnjí Aweda, his wife, and others in Olayinka community, Ifelodun Local Government Area.

The monarch and his wife were reportedly kidnapped last Saturday night when armed men stormed the palace while they were asleep.

Confirming the development, Commissioner of Police Adekimi Ojo said the command swiftly launched a coordinated operation, deploying drones and other security resources, which led to the arrest of the suspects.

According to Ojo, about 10 gunmen carried out the attack shortly after a group of miners had visited the palace earlier in the day to pay homage to the monarch. He said the assailants demanded money allegedly received during the visit.

“They broke into the palace, took him from his room, and demanded money. After he handed it over, they abducted him,” the police chief said, noting that investigations are ongoing to determine the extent of the miners’ involvement in the crime.

All the suspects are currently being held in police custody in Ilorin.

The commissioner also revealed that the monarch’s brother, who was initially taken alongside him, was later released by the attackers after he became too weak to continue the journey.

Meanwhile, the kidnappers have reportedly contacted the community, demanding a ransom of ₦400 million for the release of the monarch and his wife.

Reacting to the incident, the Chairman of Ifelodun Local Government Area, Abdulrasheed Femi Yusuf, described the abduction as disturbing and assured residents that efforts are ongoing to secure their safe return.

He added that security agencies, in collaboration with local vigilantes and forest guards, have intensified search operations across the area.

The incident has heightened concerns among residents, sparking fears of a resurgence of insecurity in Kwara South.
