A faction of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) has selected Professor Adewole Adebayo as its presidential candidate for the 2027 general election.

Adebayo emerged as the sole candidate during the party’s 2026 National Convention and Presidential Primaries held on Saturday in Bauchi.
The Electoral Committee chairman, Edoho James-Nsima, announced his emergence after delegates from the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory endorsed him as the consensus flagbearer.

He said the exercise was conducted in line with the Electoral Act and Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) guidelines for the 2027 elections.
In his acceptance speech, Adebayo, who was also the SDP presidential candidate in 2023, pledged to deliver people-centred governance focused on poverty reduction, job creation, improved security, and better access to education and healthcare.

He also called for a united opposition front to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 elections.
The convention also produced new national officers, including Sadiq Abubakar-Gombe as national chairman, alongside other executive members such as Olu Agunloye (national secretary) and Araba Aiyenigba (national publicity secretary).
The party remains divided by an internal leadership dispute, with rival claims to the chairmanship between Abubakar-Gombe and Shehu Gabam. In October 2025, the Abubakar-Gombe faction expelled Gabam over alleged financial misconduct.
