An Islamic scholar was killed early Friday in Ilesha-Baruba, Baruten LGA, Kwara state, after gunmen stormed his home.
According to Zagazola Makama, a Lake Chad security publication, the attackers struck around dawn. Police have not confirmed a motive yet.
Residents and local vigilantes chased the fleeing gunmen and killed two of them. Troops from the 244 Battalion and police units were sent in afterward to keep the peace and stop reprisals. Security forces are now patrolling more heavily and say investigations are ongoing as they try to track down the other suspects.
Community members have been asked to stay calm and share any useful information with security agencies.
The killing adds to rising tension in Baruten LGA. Just a week earlier, on May 25, gunmen kidnapped 10 people from the Yashikira Emir’s palace and attacked the police station there. And two days before that, three worshippers were killed and 15 abducted at a prayer ground in Ekiti LGA, Kwara.
