Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo is expected to lead a star-studded squad when the Seleção das Quinas take on Nigeria’s Super Eagles in an international friendly in Leiria on Wednesday.

The match at the Estádio Dr. Magalhães Pessoa will serve as Portugal’s final preparation fixture ahead of the FIFA World Cup, with both teams viewing the encounter as an important test despite its friendly status.

Portugal head coach Roberto Martínez has named a near full-strength squad for the game, blending experienced campaigners with emerging talents as he fine-tunes his team ahead of the global tournament.

Alongside Ronaldo, the squad features several key players, including Bruno Fernandes, Bernardo Silva, Rúben Dias, João Neves, João Félix and Rafael Leão.

Martínez is expected to use the match to evaluate tactical combinations across midfield and attack while ensuring his side maintains defensive solidity before the World Cup begins.

For Nigeria, the fixture offers another opportunity to gauge progress under head coach Eric Chelle as the Super Eagles continue rebuilding following their failure to qualify for the World Cup.

The game will also mark a significant personal milestone for midfielder Alex Iwobi, who is set to earn his 100th senior international cap for Nigeria.

Iwobi’s achievement will place him among a select group of Nigerian players to reach the century mark in international appearances, highlighting his consistency and importance to the national team over the years.

Nigeria are expected to rely on experienced players such as Wilfred Ndidi in midfield, while Samuel Chukwueze and Moses Simon are likely to provide attacking threat and creativity in the final third.

Although Portugal enter the match as favourites, the Super Eagles will be eager to test themselves against one of Europe’s top sides and continue building momentum under Chelle.

Portugal have enjoyed the better of previous meetings between the two countries, including a 4-0 victory in a friendly match played in Lisbon in 2022.

However, Nigeria’s recent performances and evolving squad suggest they could offer a sterner challenge this time around.

Kick-off is scheduled for 8:45pm local time, with both teams expected to approach the contest with competitive intensity as Portugal finalise preparations for the World Cup and Nigeria seek another statement performance on the international stage.
