The directive was conveyed in a circular dated June 9, 2026, and signed by the Permanent Secretary of the Edo State Ministry of Education, Enodolomwanyi Otamere.

According to the ministry, the decision was taken based on security advisories from relevant agencies warning of threats to students, staff and residents in parts of Akoko-Edo Local Government Area.

The government said the temporary closure is a precautionary measure aimed at protecting lives and property while security agencies intensify efforts to address the situation and restore normalcy.

As a result, all academic and non-academic activities in the affected schools have been suspended until further notice.

However, students currently participating in the ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examination will be allowed access to their examination centres under enhanced security arrangements coordinated by security agencies and community stakeholders.

The Ministry of Education directed principals of the affected schools to ensure the safe return of students to their parents and guardians, secure school facilities during the closure period, maintain communication with education and security authorities, and comply with any additional directives issued by the government.

Parents, guardians and residents of the affected communities have been urged to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies as efforts continue to tackle the security challenges and facilitate the reopening of the schools.

The Edo State Government reiterated its commitment to safeguarding students, teachers and educational institutions while taking necessary steps to address emerging security concerns across the state.
