Namibia’s energy minister has confirmed that Maggy Shino has been removed as Petroleum Commissioner, closing out months of speculation about her position. The minister’s office announced the change on June 18, but did not give a reason for the decision.

Shino’s exit took effect on June 2. She played a key role in developing Namibia’s oil and gas regulations as the country prepares for first oil production by 2030.

She will be replaced on an acting basis by Aune Amutenya. Amutenya was previously deputy director of petroleum exploration and production in the energy ministry.

Shino is not leaving government entirely. She will stay on as a director in the upstream petroleum unit, a new office created within the presidency.

The reshuffle aligns with President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah’s broader plan to overhaul energy laws. Proposed amendments would formally recognize the upstream unit in law and eliminate the petroleum commissioner post.
