Belgian Pro League side Genk have secured the long-term future of Nigerian defender Christian Akpan after handing him a new contract that will keep him at the club until 2030.
The 21-year-old full-back signed the extension following an impressive rise through the club’s ranks since joining Jong Genk in 2023.
Akpan recently earned his first senior international cap for Nigeria, making his Super Eagles debut in a friendly against Portugal.

The versatile defender established himself as a regular for Genk’s reserve team, making 59 competitive appearances. While primarily deployed as a right-back, he also featured at left-back and in defensive midfield, earning praise for his adaptability and consistent performances.
His displays earned him promotion to Genk’s senior squad last season, where he made his first-team debut in a playoff clash against Gent. Akpan impressed on his debut and was voted Man of the Match by the club’s supporters.

Despite attracting interest from other clubs, the Nigerian defender has opted to continue his development with the Belgian outfit by committing his long-term future to Genk.
Reacting to the contract extension, Genk’s Head of Football, Dimitri de Condé, expressed delight at Akpan’s decision to remain at the club.
“We are pleased that Christian wants to commit his future to our club,” De Condé said.

“Due to his versatility, he is an extremely interesting profile for the technical staff. Players like him give coaches the ability to switch tactics during a match if necessary.”
With his future now secured, Akpan will be looking to establish himself as a regular member of Genk’s first team during the 2026/27 season while continuing to build his international career with the Super Eagles.
