The five governors of Nigeria’s South-East have agreed to back President Bola Tinubu for a second term in 2027.

Hope Uzodimma, governor of Imo and chairman of the South-East Governors’ Forum, announced the decision on Wednesday during a meeting with the Imo Elders Council and traditional rulers in Owerri.

Uzodimma said the decision was based on performance, not politics. According to him, Tinubu’s administration has shown clear commitment to the South-East through the Renewed Hope Agenda.

“We, the five governors of the South-East, have reviewed all options and decided that we will work with President Bola Tinubu because we want to be part of Project Nigeria,” he said. “The South-East has decided. Our people judge governments by performance and not by political sentiments. The evidence is on the ground.”

He listed several federal projects as proof. These include the South East Development Commission Act signed in 2024, which is now funded and operational. He also cited the approval of a $3 billion plan to reconstruct the Eastern Rail Corridor from Port Harcourt through the South-East to Maiduguri.

Other projects he mentioned are Phase 2A and 2B access roads to the Second Niger Bridge, the dual carriageway linking Umunya, Ogbunike, Ogidi, Nkpor and Asaba with seven bridges, and the restart of commercial operations on the Port Harcourt–Aba rail line.

Uzodimma added that states in the region have also seen higher federal allocations, improved security operations, and access to student loan programs for South-East youths.

He said the governors plan to pay a joint courtesy visit to the president soon to formalize the partnership.

The announcement comes a day after Alex Otti, governor of Abia and a Labour Party chieftain, praised Tinubu’s economic reforms as “courageous.”

The other South-East governors are Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra, Peter Mbah of Enugu, and Francis Nwifuru of Ebonyi.
