The Kano State Fire Service has rescued 16 people after a residential building collapsed in the Dan Dishe area of Kwanar Yashi, Fagge Local Government Area of the state.

Several other people are still feared trapped under the rubble following the incident, which occurred in the early hours of Saturday.

The Fire Service spokesperson, Saminu Abdullahi, confirmed the incident in a statement, saying the agency received a distress call at about 4:32 a.m.

According to him, emergency responders were immediately deployed from the Fire Service headquarters to the scene, where they found a residential building measuring approximately 20 by 30 feet had collapsed.

Abdullahi said rescue teams recovered 16 victims from the debris, including three children who were found unconscious.

The children were identified as five-year-old Affan Yusuf, seven-year-old Hassana Yusuf and nine-month-old Ummulkursum Yusuf.

He said rescue operations were still ongoing as emergency workers continued efforts to locate and rescue anyone who might remain trapped beneath the rubble.

“The rescue team recovered 16 people from the rubble. Operations are still ongoing as more people are feared trapped,” Abdullahi said.

The cause of the building collapse remains unknown, with the Fire Service confirming that an investigation has commenced to determine what led to the incident.

The agency also urged residents to observe necessary safety precautions, particularly during the rainy season, to reduce the risk of similar incidents.

The latest collapse comes less than a month after a three-storey building under construction collapsed in Nasarawa Local Government Area of Kano State, killing one person and injuring three others.
