The National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) has announced the death of its University Bursar, Mallam Nasiru Gusau Marafa, who was reportedly shot dead while returning from Gusau, Zamfara State.
Marafa died on Sunday, September 6, 2026, in what the university described as a sudden and untimely death.
The university disclosed his death in an official notice signed by its Registrar and Secretary to Council, Oladipo Adetayo Ajayi.
According to the statement, information available to the university indicated that Marafa was shot while returning from Gusau. However, the institution did not provide further details about the circumstances surrounding the incident or identify those responsible.
The university described Marafa as a dedicated and committed staff member who served meritoriously and held several positions of responsibility during his career.
He was appointed Bursar of NOUN in September 2026.
Reacting to his death, the university described it as a “profound loss” to the institution, mourning him as a distinguished colleague, dedicated administrator and valued member of the NOUN community.
“The entire University community mourns the passing of a distinguished colleague, dedicated administrator and valued member of the NOUN family,” the statement said.
NOUN extended its condolences to Marafa’s immediate family, relatives, friends, colleagues and others affected by his death.
The university also prayed for strength for the bereaved family and the entire university community as they come to terms with the loss.
NOUN said details of the burial arrangements would be communicated once they are released by the family.
The institution further prayed that Allah forgive Marafa’s shortcomings and grant him Al-Jannah Firdaus.
