Nigeria’s Female Basketball Team, DTigress has won their first group game in the Ongoing FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Antwerp.

The 2023 Afro-Basket Champions defeated Senegal as they came from behind to win the match 72 to 65 in their quest to qualify for the Olympics in Paris. DTigress who are paired in the same group with the current Olympic Champions, USA and Belgium won the first quarter of the game 20 to 18. The Senegalese won the second quarter 47 to 36 as they took the lead into the second quarter. Nigeria’s Amy Okonkwo showed why she was voted as the Most Valuable Player at the 2023 Afro-Basket tournament as she led Nigeria with 21 points and 10 rebounds.

Lauren Ebo was also instrumental in the win for Nigeria as she made 11 contributions to the game. DTigress held on to win the last quarter 23 to 8. Senegal had the chance to win the game after leading in the 2nd and 3rd quarter respectively but they could not hold on to the lead. Senegal’s Yacine Diop’s 23 points are not enough for her team as they will be hoping to bounce back when they face Belgium on Friday, February 9th, 2024.

DTigress will face the United States of America on Friday in the second group game as they hope to secure a spot at the 2024 Olympics.
