Aviation unions have declared their participation in the indefinite labour strike set to commence on June 3.

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) announced the nationwide strike on May 31, in response to the federal government’s refusal to increase the minimum wage from N60,000.

Following suit, the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) and the National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE) confirmed on June 1 that their members would also join the strike.

In a joint statement signed by Ocheme Aba (NUATE), Frances Akinjole (ATSSSAN), Abdul Saidu (ANAP), and Olayinka Abioye (NAAPE), the unions instructed their branches to adhere to the NLC and TUC directive.

“In compliance with the directive from the Nigeria Labour Congress and Trade Union Congress of Nigeria—we hereby inform the general public, aviation service providers, airline operators, aviation businesses, and all aviation workers nationwide that starting from 0000hrs of June 3, 2024, all services at all Nigerian airports shall be fully withdrawn till further notice,” the statement reads.

The unions noted that due to international flights already en route to Nigeria, the strike at international terminals would commence on June 4.

They urged all aviation workers to take the strike seriously and ensure complete compliance. Branch officers have been tasked with enforcing this directive across all airports
