Mauritius Prime Minister Pravind Jugnauth acknowledged a significant loss in Sunday’s parliamentary election, with his coalition, L’Alliance Lepep, defeated by the opposition Alliance of Change led by Navin Ramgoolam. Jugnauth, who was seeking a second term, stated, “The population has decided to choose another team,” as he congratulated the anticipated winners and expressed hopes for the nation’s continued success.
Mauritius, regarded as one of Africa’s most stable democracies, saw this election marred by controversy after a phone-tapping scandal led to leaked recordings of public figures online. In response, the government briefly imposed a social media ban, which was reversed following public outcry.
Although final results are pending, Ramgoolam’s coalition appears positioned to lead the Indian Ocean nation. The vote also follows a landmark agreement in which the UK relinquished sovereignty over the Chagos Islands to Mauritius.
