Omoyele Sowore, publisher of Sahara Reporters, has urged Nigerians to participate in a “nationwide/global protest” against the judiciary following the controversial prosecution of human rights activist Dele Farotimi.
Farotimi was arrested on Tuesday by the Ekiti State Police Command on charges of alleged defamation and cyberbullying.
His arrest came a day after he raised the alarm about plans to abduct him, citing a petition filed by Afe Babalola, a senior advocate of Nigeria (SAN).
The activist was subsequently arraigned before an Ekiti magistrate court and remanded on a 16-count charge.
His detention has sparked widespread outcry on social media, with prominent figures such as Peter Obi and Atiku Abubakar calling for his immediate release.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Thursday, Sowore announced that the protest would begin on December 10.
Planned locations include Afe Babalola Chambers in Lagos, the Federal Ministry of Justice in Abuja, Police Headquarters in Ekiti, and Kings’ College Campus in London.
“Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere,” Sowore’s post declared, emphasizing the need for collective action against perceived judicial overreach.
